Virtual Colonoscopy is a new approach to screening patients for colon cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States and approximately 150,000 people are diagnosed each year. The good news is that when detected early 90% of colon cancers can be prevented and/or successfully treated.
What is a Virtual Colonoscopy (VC)? Virtual Colonoscopy is an extremely safe, minimally invasive colon screening which can only be performed on a multi-slice spiral CT scanner with the appropriate computer software. CT images of the abdomen and pelvis are acquired after introducing air into the rectum via a small rectal tube. Once the data is collected the computer software will reconstruct the images in 3 or 4 dimensions. The radiologist can then interpret the images as he takes a "virtual tour" or fly-through of the colon. This entire procedure takes only minutes and involves no sedatives unlike traditional colonoscopy.
How does VC compare to traditional colonoscopy? Conventional or traditional colonoscopy is still considered the gold standard due to its ability to detect and remove polyps during the same procedure. Virtual Colonoscopy has however, shown promise with similar sensitivity in detecting clinically important polyps. The advantage for VC is that it is less invasive and more comfortable for many patients. We strongly suggest you speak with your physician to help determine if conventional or virtual colonoscopy is the best choice for you.
